Czech Digital Nomad Visa guide for remote employees and freelancers

Czech Digital Nomad Visa is designed for skilled IT and marketing professionals from select countries who want the freedom to work remotely while living in one of Europe’s most beautiful and affordable destinations.
The Czech Digital Nomad Visa is for remote employees of medium or large foreign companies, as well as freelancers who run or plan to start their own business. It is only available to those who have not held any Czech long-term visa in the past 12 months.
Eligible Countries
The program is open to citizens of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States.
Financial Requirements
Applicants are advised to have a monthly income of around USD 3,300 (at least 1.5× the Czech average salary) and at least USD 7,000 per adult in their bank account.
Family Inclusion
Family members such as a spouse, registered partner, and dependent children must be included in the application at the same time as the main applicant. They cannot be added later in a separate process. Once the application is approved, the embassy will arrange a single appointment for the whole family, and everyone must attend together.
Proof of Accommodation
A valid proof of accommodation in Czechia is required. While securing this document before relocation can be challenging, professional providers can prepare visa-compliant accommodation confirmations even before you sign a long-term lease or arrive in the country.
Visa Duration and Extensions
The visa is initially issued for up to one year and can be extended with a two-year long-term residence permit, for a total stay of up to three years.
Pathway to Permanent Residence
Time spent in Czechia under the Digital Nomad Visa counts toward the five-year continuous residency requirement for permanent residence. This makes it a potential pathway to obtaining a long-term residence permit in the Czech Republic.
Who can apply Czech Digital Nomad Visa?
A. Employee of a Foreign Employer
This visa pathway is open to applicants who are employed by a foreign company or public sector institution that has at least 50 employees worldwide. The role must be in either the IT or marketing field, and the employment contract must explicitly allow the applicant to work remotely from Czechia using digital communications tools.
To qualify, the employment relationship must remain with the same foreign employer throughout the applicant’s stay in Czechia. The position cannot be transferred to a Czech-based contract, and all work must continue to be carried out under the foreign company’s terms and conditions.
Applicants must submit an employer affidavit confirming that the company employs at least 50 staff members worldwide. The employment contract must clearly state three key points:
- The gross salary is at least 1.5 times the Czech average gross annual salary.
- The applicant will remain employed by the same company while in Czechia.
- Remote work is permitted under the terms of employment.
In addition, a company extract (an official registration document from the business register or equivalent in the employer’s home country) is required to verify the legal status of the employer. All foreign documents must be properly legalized or apostilled, and accompanied by sworn Czech translations.
B. Freelancer (Self-Employed)
The freelancer pathway is for self-employed professionals in IT or marketing who wish to live in Czechia while working for Czech or foreign clients.
Applicants must already hold a Czech trade licence in the relevant field or apply for one before submitting their Digital Nomad Program application. The work must clearly fall within the accepted IT or marketing specializations defined by the program.
To obtain a Czech trade licence, freelancers register with the Trade Licensing Office. Most IT and marketing activities are classed as “free trades” and do not require formal professional credentials. Registration is typically completed within ten working days, and the licence is issued as an official registration certificate.
At this stage, the goal is not to start working immediately, but to file a free trade declaration to obtain an “invitation to prove visa or residence”.
Because non-EU foreigners without a valid Czech residence permit cannot operate as self-employed right away, the Trade Licensing Office will register the licence in conditional status. You will receive an official document confirming your registration request, which must be included in your Digital Nomad Program application as proof of business purpose.
Once the visa is granted, and you arrive in Czechia, you must first register your address. After the registration, you return to the Trade Licensing Office with your temporary licence to collect your official trade licence.
With the official licence activated, you are required to register for tax identification number, social security and public health insurance. You must also file an annual income tax return in Czechia, typically by the end of March each year.
As part of the visa application, freelancers must provide either a client contract or a client affidavit confirming that:
- The project is in the field of IT or marketing.
- The contract specifies the project’s duration.
- The agreed payment, when divided across the months of the contract, meets or exceeds the minimum income threshold.
You must provide proof of full, one-year health insurance before you can pick up your visa. This insurance must cover all of your medical needs to be considered comprehensive.
Things are a little different if you’re from the US, UK, Israel, or Japan. You don’t need to buy a full-year private insurance plan. Rather, you will register for public health insurance after you get to the Czech Republic and sign a special document (called an affidavit) at the Czech embassy. Still, the embassy may ask you to have private insurance for the first two or three months, just to make sure you’re covered until your public insurance begins.
2. Czech Republic Digital Nomad Visa requirements
A. IT Professionals
The IT field includes, but is not limited to, roles such as software developer, project manager, web developer, systems analyst, network engineer, cybersecurity specialist, DevOps engineer, or data analyst.
Applicants must meet one of the following two criteria. The first option is to hold a university degree or higher professional education qualification of at least three years’ duration in a STEM field.
The second option is to have at least three years of verifiable professional experience in the IT field. Such experience must be proven through contracts, employment records, reference letters detailing the scope of work, or official certificates (including recognized online certifications). All documentation must clearly indicate the type of work performed, its duration, and the entity for which it was carried out.
B. Marketing Professionals
Expertise may focus on specific disciplines, including SEO, advertising, digital marketing, influencer marketing, social media management, copywriting, content marketing, market research, field and event marketing, media marketing, or brand marketing.
In the marketing category, professional experience alone does not meet the eligibility criteria, a relevant degree is mandatory. Applicants must have completed at least a three-year university or higher professional program in marketing, advertising, economics, business administration, business management, media and communication, public relations, or another field directly related to marketing.
